Hi all! Am taking my AOW and I was taught that to search for your buddy, you have to look around "two times out and 1 time in. Errr... what does that mean? Does it mean look around clockwise direction twice and anti-clockwise direction once before ascending?

Pardon my stupidity, just wanna make sure that I get it absolutely right.

I swim a kind of circle.
My best buddy I ever had could hear my computer pipsing over far distance and could direct swim to me when she heared it (I guess noone told her that she can't be able to know the direction under water).
So I just have to breath 3 time fast, get an warning and my buddy comes :-)

If you're still in the AOW course, you should certainly ask your instructor what he/she means by "two times out and one time in." I have no idea what that could mean.

There's no "doctrine" as far as I know, PADI or otherwise, regarding procedures when a buddy is lost. The principle for recreational diving often is -- search for xx seconds, then surface... buddy does the same thing, and you find each other on the surface.

This is debated occasionally here. It's all very dependent on the type of dive, depth, visibility conditions, etc.

Some will just say, "Don't separate from your buddy or teammate. Period."

I guess the only absolute principle is, make sure you and your buddy explicitly agree on a procedure before you dive.

If you are having a problem losing your buddy tie a string around his leg and and yours.

Fully agree: Usually group of 4 people jump in the water without any briefing before than seperate. Now what?? surface?
Why surface still 2 and 2 so two buddy teams.
But DM is not with us....
Complete confusion....

Extended version would be 1 group descent again while the other ascent.....
Nearly saw that....
