OK I work out almost five to seven days a week, This work out can vary from lifting wieghts to swimming up to a couple of hours, or jumping rope for a couple of hours for my cardio. Now I know that I have very good endurance and I just had a physical my pulse was in the mid 50's, so I shouldn't be having problems right.

When I lift weights I do lift quite alot for my size and I vary that work out from power to strength and endurance depending on the day.

Now when I go diving or at least walking to the dive with my equipment on my back no matter how flat or easy the walk is, many times I get out of breath and I can't figure it out. I should not be getting out of breath, with all the cardio that I do. I am very comfortable in the water and I can swim like a fish.

Thirty years ago I did have a bad incident when I was taking my open water dives. I am wondering if that could be a part of the problem?

STOGEY- Hmm SOB when hauling dive gear... nickname is Stogey....

Your heart rate sounds good and the lifting you do should set you for that. I just do not know man.. but then again.. I am not a Dr and did not stay at a holiday inn last night.

Stogey,

By "short of breath," do you mean that you actually have to stop, or just that your respiration increases more than you would expect? Without getting into the potential influence of cigar smoking on your lungs, you must keep in mind that fit people tend to react to increased workloads a little faster. This is just the body acting in anticipation of another big workout.

Also, when you lift, do you train your legs or just upper body? Lifting and carrying is done more with the legs than the arms (if done right, anyway)- it doesn't matter how much you bench if you never do leg press, squats, etc.

If you know you are doing everything right training-wise but are truly gasping for air unexpectedly, then you should talk to your doctor or at least DAN about your "bad experience" and what might have happened then.

It sounds like it may be driven by anxiety (maybe due to your bad OW experience during class). If it is anxiety driven it should subside the more comfortable and confident you become diving. This is an educated guess. If you do not get short of breath while doing cardio it gives me the impression that it is more mental then physical. Your Pulse rate is at an athletic rate common with runners. You are at the age where you should be having a complete physical yearly especially a stress test and E.K.G.

On the average I only smoke 1 cigar a day if that much. Being a truck driver I am lucky enough that I have the type of job that requires me to use a hotel provided by my company, and it is at the same place every time. Therefore even at the hotel I have ample opportunity to workout even there. I have even joined a local gym there so that I can keep up on my swimming, and other cardio exercises.

During the 4th I had to lay over there and a friend and I went to DC. for the day, we were there from 9:30 am to about 7:30 pm and walked I'd guess about 1- 13 miles through the day. I didn't even feel it, in fact it was my friend who put out the idea to go back to the hotel first, becuase I wasn't about to stoop to that.

Just laike in the military a god NCO never gives up, an officer may call it quits but not an NCO, and I try to live by that even in civilian life, within reason that is.

So maybe this is just more psychological and maybe I'm making something bigger than it should be.

It may be psychological and should go away in time (if indeed it is). A friend of mine who is athletic was stressed on his dives and short of breath. I had to coach his breathing on the swim out to the line. He was sweating and short of breath. Now that he has been diving for awhile he is fine. Your stats seem to be in order.
