Maybe I have a setting wrong, but when i try to take pictures while zoomed in (14-42 pancake kit lens) The camera takes a picture but without being zoomed in on the subject. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks

zak

You must manually zoom the lens by rotating it. From what you describe, it sounds as if you are using the "magnifying glass" button to "zoom". All that does in magnify a small part of the lcd display which the camera then uses as its autofocus area. If effect, that is used to autofocus on a very small area of the target.

I just got my EPL2 a week ago. I think I will use that "zoom focus" alot for things like a cardinal fish hiding in an urchin and other such subject with interfering foregrounds.

I don't know why they ship the factory housing without a zoom ring. I didn't get a zoom ring for over a month after I got my housing here in Thailand.

I think you are suggesting that the OP may be trying to zoom in the housing without the zoom ring. The reason they don't include zoom rings is that they are lens dependent, at least for the E-PL1, and it wouldn't make sense to add in a zoom ring that you wouldn't be using.

Any other additions to your rig? I went the xz-1 route. Let's get them wet!

Okay I feel just a little dumb now. I was so use to auto zoom on my PS and assumed this was the same for the OLY. I did figure this out after reading how to use the zoom focus in the book and then messing with it on the camera. I do have the zoom gear for the housing.

Thanks for the help though :)

Is the zoom ring (gear) actually necessary or does everyone primarily shoot with the lens set at wide angle (14mm)?

The zoom gear is essential, especially if you want to shoot macro using a macro adapter lens. You need to be zoomed out to have good working distance.

Besides, why have a zoom lens you can't zoom??

For me the zoom ring is absolutely necessary and one of the primary reasons to have the camera and housing.

In fact, I do most of my shooting zoomed in -- but just when I think I should go get the Macro lens, along comes a WA shot and I'd really happy I have the option.

You CAN just set the lens at 42mm for macro (and add a wet lens), but it is nice to be able to zoom out if you want to do something other than macro. Bottom line, it is well worth the cost to purchase the zoom ring.
I find it less necessary to zoom with the 9-18 lens, but again, it is worth having it.
