Define proper.

It's certainly not DIR. Having something like that hanging loosely off that D-ring can interfere with your SPG and would certainly not mesh well with stage or deco bottles.

The DIR place for the SMB is your left pocket.

miunderstood.... the story of my life... the smb tucked in the storage pack, with the bolt snap clipped to the d-ring on the left... I even think I remeber that example being shown in the Halcyon MC OM....

johnnthan's right about this, if you don't have a pocket on your suit another possibility is rigging 2 loops of bungie from the bottom of your plate and rolling the smb/lift bag and stowing it in the loops. it keep it out of the way if you don't have a pocket. Another option is the "storage packs" which is essentially a back pad that bolts to the plate and a rolled smb can stow under that, which is also dir if looking to go that way....

The buttring is comonly used to clip reels out of the way when not in use.

I use my scooter ring to temporary clip items that I'm using at the time and just need to use my hands for a moment.

My most common use for the scooter ring is to clip the surface float reel while descending at the begining of the dive and ascending at the end of the dive, but lights and goodybags are cliped routinely during the dive.

I have an Eclipse, but I'm pretty sure this is true of the Pioneer too. It has D-rings on the crotch strap. One that hits in low back, and one the sits kinda in the middle on the front. I have been totally curious about what people might attach to these. I've never seen them used. If you put something on the front one it would probably bang you about the knees, not to mention look pretty weird. The one in back might come in handy - but for what????? Does anyone know?
Carol,

(As the others have already noted) my scooter is clipped off to the front crotch D, and a 400' Pathfinder reel is clipped off to the butt D ring. You can also use the front D for temporarily holding things you're going to shortly need, like a jonline (camera, etc.), after you begin your ascent.

The rear D-ring can also be used as a handhold for a buddy/team member in case of scooter failure.
I have never seen or heard of anyone recommending or doing this. It would not be very nice on the fingers. You either hold on to the crotch strap or hold on to the towers knees with your armpits (If you can visualize that ;) )

Thanks! I never would have thought of a scooter. I 've never used one, or seen one used. Although I saw a couple on the rocks by the ramp at Lobos once. I hear bouyancy is tough with those. I'd be afraid I'd lose track of my ups and downs if I was moving that fast and give myself an embolism. I'll stick to the boat I think. Nice to know about reels going in back. I have no pockets and while I would like a finger spool, I had no idea where I'd put it. Now I know. Thanks again! :D

• D-rings on kit – 5 D-rings is standard on the hogarthian kit (three on backplate harness and two on crotch strap). Four D-rings are all that’s actually necessary for swim dives as the D-ring in front of crotch strap is for DPV use only.

Towing - DPV failure procedure:

•Tow-ee grabs the crotch strap of the tow-er. (Make sure to get a good hold under it, do not try holding on to the D ring as this can be a quite uncomfortable)

•Tow-ee establishes neutral to slightly positive buoyancy (negative will create excess drag and slow exit), then tucks in between the tower's legs who initiates the tow to exit. (tow-ee should stay tucked in with head down because head-up position creates excessive drag!).

Out of Gas - DPV gas sharing protocols:

•Out of gas diver tows the gas donor (wounded diver always in front) unless the receiver is overly stressed in which case the donor may decide to perform the exiting navigation him/her self.

• Tow spare DPV - Operating two scooters simultaneously while sharing gas is considered too complex and therefore unsafe. The diver being towed clips spare DPV (if operable) off at his/her standard tow attachment point (rear crotch D-ring) and then grabs the crotch strap of gas receiver who initiates tow to exit
