One of the reg sets I'm considering is the XTX50. But when it comes to the octo, does anyone know if the xtx20 octo is good enough for cold water or must I also get the xtx50 octo?

why do you need a cold water reg when you are in singapore?

anyway, cold water really means 10degrees celsius and below. if you are not going anything colder than that, there is not worry.

I have the XTX-50, and have really enjoyed it. I don't really know about the XTX-20, as my reg came with a free Egress octopus, which I really like. I think that Apeks is still offering that deal, so it might be worth looking into.

divekatkeens - being in singapore doesn't mean I only dive in Singapore. Have Reg will travel... :)

CC1020 - We haven't got the free egress deal on my side of the world, in fact, we haven't even got the free parts for life program. All we get is a limited manufacturers warranty for a year. sigh....

If you look for Apeks AT20, I recommend XTX 50 is for cold water diving with balanced system.

yup! if you look at the apeks boxes, the classify their Octos as 3rd stages... which confused me for abit initially. I am looking at the XTX 50 for my 2nd stage but for the octo, I'm wondering if the XTX20 octo is sufficient or is it still necessary to get the XTX50 Octo if I'm diving in cold water.

I suggest XTX 50, for deep cold water dive ATX/XTX 200 is the best selection...

I believe the XTX40 is the lowest model Apeks classifies as "cold water" according to the Apeks website. An XTX50 primary with XTX40 octo should fit the bill. But there's only a couple dollars difference between the two. XTX20 is not classified as cold water according to the Apeks website.

According to the aqualung website, my own research and perhaps the best aqualung tech in WA state the *TX40 is fine for cold water; it's basicly a *TX20 but made for cold water. Every reg above the 40 level is cold water suitable.

However, mechanically, a 20 is a 40 is a 50 is a 100 is a 200. They're all the same. The 20 is the basic warm water reg, the 40 is the same but suitable for cold water, the 50 adds inhalation control to the 40 platform, the 100 is 8% smaller then the 50 and the 200 is 8% smaller then the 100. Also the TX, ATX and XTX are all the same except the TX line is slightly larger then the A/XTX.

That's why I like Apex so much; that product line makes sense to me. It's how I'd build regs if I ran a company.

As for your original question goodeatsfan: to be on the safe side I personally would get a *TX40 if you think you'll dive cold (or even cool) water at any point in your dive career. This is your life support, be as conservative as possible. I will probably put a *TX 40 or 50 on my octo hose to replace the free egress I got when I'm financially able.
