My wife, four friends and I headed to La Parguera on the west side of the southern coast of Puerto Rico last week. Based on recommendations from Scubaboard we stayed at the Posada Porlamar hotel and dove with Parguera Divers.

It's about a 2 hour drive south from San Juan to the little village of La Parguera. The rules of the road are a little different in PR so take care driving (hint: stay to the right to pass).

The Hotel was clean and the staff was nice. For the amount of time we spent in the room the accommodations were fine.

La Parguera Divers run their boat out of the hotel so we had a very short walk. Angel Rovira (one of the owners of La Parguera Divers) was a pleasure to dive with and has a great attitude. The ride out to the dive sites was about 25 minutes (fast boat!). Water, soda & snacks were provided.

My friends & I are all new divers (Padi AOW w/ 20 dives) so we appreciated the level of service & guidance provided by La Parguera. The dives were more challenging than our last two trips (Grand Cayman) with a noticeable current, greater average depths (60-120) and 2-4 ft seas but the staff made sure we all enjoyed our dives. We dove six times (twice at night). The water temperature was around 82F at the surface. We didn't see as much marine life as in the Caymans, but we were not disappointed. At the end of the dive we rinsed our gear at the dock and left everything for the staff to lock up. In the morning our gear was on the boat and our tanks were dressed.

Pros:

Great diving and great service. PR is a 3.5 hour direct flight from the DC area.

Cons:

La Parguera is a very small village and there is not much to do besides diving & drinking. Food options are limited. In fact, three of us came down with a nasty case of food poisoning on our last day. :yuck: Needless to say it was a very long flight home. The hotel restaurant is good but overpriced (the hotel food did not make us sick, we think it was a burrito shack in town). Get the fuel option when you rent the car. Finding gas near the airport was a pain.

Hope you found this helpful.
