I start the PSD course for our department in June. This is the first couse ever offered by our Dept. Just wanted to know what to expect and if there are any particular areas of the course to concentrate more on than others.
thanks

Basic skills and comfort. Get those under control and you'll do just fine. And you need to pay attention.

Gary D.

What Gary said..., get comfortable in the water and with your skills and gear.

I tell new guys with us..., it takes 4 guys to get one diver in the water..., that means you are the diver only 25% of the time. Being solid, trustworthy, dependable and safe topside is every bit as important from a team point of view.

Good Luck.., stay safe!!

Make sure you're in shape to do a 500 yard swim (no gear) and an 800 yard with mask, fins & snorkel.

Get comfortable with the gear you'll be using and can operate everything with your eyes closed.

And get your buoyancy dialed in- make sure your weight is distributed so that your balanced.

And get ready to have some fun, it will be a lot of hard work but it's worth it!

As others here have said - be in shape and know your basics.

Often times it's a failure of the basic skills that kills divers in 70 degree water with 500' viz at 25'. Public Safety Diving is usually taking place in retention ponds and silt in 40 degrees with zero viz at any depth.

As PSDs we need to have our ***** securely squared away more than "joe average diver"*.

*No offense to the recreational folks intended at all, but they typically dive for pleasure, not under high-stress circumstances, they can pre-plan their dives for days or weeks and schedule them for a certain time and place.
