I recall someone (Dee?) suggesting that you can protect your 5050 housing lens when you travel by covering it with a cut-off foam beer "huggie." Do folks leave this home made cover on when the camera/housing is in the rinse tank? Seems like the rinse tank would be where the greatest risk of scratching would occur...

I don't leave my camera in the rinse tank if others can use it. I use the stubby holder over the lens at all times when the camera isn't actually on a dive with me or in my own rinse bucket.

I take a collapsable 6 pack cooler with me in my camera kit. This makes a great added protection case for the rig and provides my own area to rinse gear in. When I'm done it folds flat and away we go!
 
Like alcina, I don't use a camera rinse tank other than to dunk my rig in for a quick rinse job. On a boat I keep it wrapped in a wet towel, especially if there's no room for my collapsable cooler. Any other time I keep the Koozie cover on the housing.

What part are we trying to protect, the lens or the whole lense "tube"? Wouldn't the lens cover protect the lens itself?

The lens on the port is just part of it. When you have more than one housing and strobes in the rinse tank, all kinds of damage other than scratched lenses can occur. The shutter release lever on the PT-15, and others, can be damaged if not snapped off altogether. The vibrations of the boat can loosen screws and the sloshing water rubbing and bumping everything together and tangle sync cords and damage strobes. I'd much rather wrap my rig in a wet towel and hold it or place it one seat next to me. The wet towel keeps the water from drying on the housing so no salt crystals will form. And even if they do temporarily, a good soak in warm fresh water (which I do when I get off the boat before opening the housing) will dissolve them.
