Propagate Corals in Open Sea

Is it possible to propagate corals in the open sea? Some salt water aquarium owners have reportedly successfully propagated corals. Can this be done in the sea?

There is a couple of guys in the Florida Keys somewhere who started an experiment to cultivate soft corals for the aquarium trade. Some of the more hardy specimens have flourished and others are doing ok. The water temps in florida aren't compatible with all of them they have tried.

The also have a few hard corals and are experimenting with others.

I keep and propagate a number of corals myself, but, with some noteable exceptions (like giant clams) I don't see aquaculture as saving the world's reefs. I think most of them are too far gone anyways, but, for the sake of this disscussion I would also point out that most reefs are dying because of climate cange and run off, just replacing the corlas doesn't help with these huge problems.
