Any MD's out there that can explain the ProEar 2000 concept to me?

Does this mask pose any danger to my ears that a normal mask does not? What would happen if one or both ear covers collapsed at depth?

I posted in Diving Medicine due to the potential for injury.

Thanks in advance.

I have tried them.

The primary concept of the Proear2000 is to keep the ears dry. Claims about facilitating equalization are also made, and some users do report easier clearing, but I remain skeptical on this point.

The possible benefits include ability to dive with conditions of the ear that might otherwise preclude scuba, reduction in infections of the external auditory canal by water-borne microorganisms, and reduction of repeated exposure of the outer ear to cold water with resultant exostosis (build up of bony deposits).

The Proear2000 covers are such that they would not "collapse" at depth, although they might leak. This could be injurious if one were diving with a perforated eardrum or other condition requiring a dry external ear.

Also, if diving in cooler water leakage of just one side could possibly result in caloric/alternothermic vertigo, a sensation of spinning & dizziness resulting from unequal ear temperatures.

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Best regards.
