Dr. Deco,

the topics of PP02, PPN2, Oxygen Toxicity and Nitrogen narcosis have been well discussed in my training... however as I look to varied types of trimix, I have questions on the inert "filler" gas's impact on the body at depth.

Are there any appreciable limits of Helium exposure on the body that could be reached before or at the same time as the physiological Oxygen and Nitrogen limits?

Thanks,
David

Hello dschonbrun:

Helium is truly an inert gas. The major effect of helium would be one of hydrostatic pressure. This pressure changes the shapes of molecule. For example, pores in cell membranes are squeezed and are no longer able to pass molecules through the cell membrane.
