The G9 is impressive. I like it, and this what I have found.

The supplied Canon software has updates available for ZoomBrowser and Powerstitch to help support the RAW file format. This is worth the time and can be downloaded for free from the Canon site.

Microsoft has a RAW file converter (RAWViewerSetup) available for free on their download site. You will need to run GenuineCheck to get this. This download will allow anyone running MS Windows to view the RAW file format, so if you send RAW photos to friends, this is a big deal.

Canon offers a housing for this camera that is affordable. This will put one in everyone's hands.

The RAW file format will not shoot in the AUTO mode. I will need to learn camera manual principals again. No biggy in my opinion

This is also available for MS users.

Windows Imaging Component

1.2MB

The Windows Imaging Component supports discovery of new and proprietary (e.g., Raw) image formats. Any application that uses WIC can take advantage of new image formats as soon as their CODECs (encoder/decoders) are installed on the computer. WIC includes updated CODECs for JPEG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, & BMP that are more secure than previously released CODECs for these formats, and also supports a new high-performance image format called Windows Media Photo. Additionally, WIC provides metadata readers and writers for common image metadata formats, and enables applications to preserve their own metadata inside image files so they don't need to create "sidecar files".
