I'll be heading off to Bali, Komodo and Sulawesi in a couple weeks, and bringing with me cameras and laptops with rechargeable batteries. So what type of converters/adapters will I need for power?

I'm thinking to order this adapter kit ... BALI PLUG ADAPTERS

... but all it does is convert plug types. What about power? Will I need a stepdown transformer like this one ... MWP109 100 WATT TRAVEL SIZE VOLTAGE CONVERTER TRANSFORMER

Will I need a surge protector? And if so, does anyone have any recommendations?

I do want to protect my camera and laptop batteries, as it's highly doubtful I'd be able to get replacements should one of them get damaged ...

Bob,

Take a look at the devices you need to power. Some will almost certainly be "universal input" or ~100-240VAC 50/60 hz. Universal input means you need only a "plug" converter.

If any of your devices require only ~115 VAC, then you need a "power converter" to use them on 220-240 VAC.

Power converters are more expensive, and Heavy. If you have only one or two 115VAC only devices you may want to see if there is a either a universal input power supply available, or a 220-240 only power supply available for these devices. That will save you the cost and weight of a power converter (transformer)

I don't know about the power thingie, but the adapter in your link is the right one, there is mostly Schuko plugs and outlets around in Indonesia.
It might be an idea though to bring along a multiplug if you have more devices, there is often just one or two electrical outlets in the hotel rooms.

Go to Walmart or Target and get a universal adapter plug for about $8.00....I always loose one or two a year.

I don't need a converter for any of my stuff, its all 110-240 already, most bought from the US. i think most do that now.

I would suggest you bring a surge protector though, there is no ground in Indo electrical. Mine got fried the other day.. :D

I now have one from Belkin, the Surgemaster. Has multiple plugs in it. So get one adaptor for your plug that goes into the wall and then plug the rest of your plugs into the surgemaster/power strip and you should be golden. has 6 or 8 outlets in it...

Walmart also has a universal plug adapter/voltage converter set in a handy little kit, hanging on a hook somewhere around the TV's. Did everything we needed in Indonesia, and will cover any other trip you take.

Mike although my stuff had a 240 switch on it the plug ins must have an adapter.....What I do when I go somewhere I will ask if they have a plug strip as those have a surge protector then use my unversal plug adapter.

Bruce the item I am talking about is a multi plug adapter "all in one" that weighs around 3 oz found in the luggage section....That unit you have a link to is about 5 lbs...and with all the love the Indonesian airlines have for luggage every ounce counts.

Well, actually about 14 ounces, but you're right, that's a lot more than 3.
