Finances kept us from booking our first trip to Cozumel this year, which leads to a question -- what should I consider when visiting an area after a major hurricane?
Along with worrying about diarrhea and tetanus shots, what about mold in hotel rooms and higher mosquito counts? What health risks should I anticipate before packing? I can bring extra medications -- if I know I will need them.
How about medical facilities? I'd hate to get there, get sick, and have to be transported elsewhere. It makes sense to ask about the local hospitals or clinics, but what about whether the nearest decompression chamber is still open? Have health professionals been displaced? Are medical supplies hard to get?
It appears that low season in Cozumel will be quiet. Several hotels are waiting until the holidays to reopen, and I would expect other businesses to gear up when the tourists arrive. Things should get a good shake-down before we can go -- but I still wonder what my plans should be before getting there.
This would have been a great topic before Hurricane Wilma. But now with the clean up efforts I am concerned that we might be getting more than we bargained for if we go next summer or fall.
Hurricanes happen, so perhaps someone who has a post-hurricane story can give me some pointers.
