I am curious about the Poseidon regulators. I see some are cleaned for nitrox and other are only good for air. The Xstream has an air regulator and another for nitrox and trimix. I am curious if the Jetstream are the same way. Can i buy a jetstream and use nitrox with it? Can it be used for trimix as well or is the jetstream only good for air 21% O2

Thanks

...while I'm not a reg expert.....I do own half a dozen Jetstreams (although I'll admit I don't really dive them anymore....they've been reliable and fine performance, but parts/service has sometimes been expensive/few techs service them and know what they're doing 'setting them up') and I'd assume any recent model Jetstream will be good out of the box for up to 40% nitrox...which is the 'standard' ceiling percentage before it's considered going into the 'tech' realm of O2 mixes. Jetstreams only come in one version, not an 'air' vs 'nitrox' version.....however, if you're buying an older/used one...since it will need a 'service' anyway, just to be safe, you can make sure the reg tech installs the appropriate material/type of O-rings to make sure it is compatable with 'high' percentages of oxygen. Also, if you're planning to go 'tech', you will likely need multiple sets of regs........recreational reg/regs for diving 'air' or nitrox mixes below 40%...and 'tech' regs for higher than 40% nitrox mixes/trimix, as 'tech' regs need to be kept 'oxygen-clean' to safely use 'tech' mixes......if you take an 'oxygen-clean' reg and use it once on a tank of gas which doesn't meet 'hyper-clean' standards...your 'tech' reg is now 'dirty/contaminated' and you will have to pay a reg tech to tear the whole reg set down, oxygen-clean it, and reassemble it before you can safely use it with a 'tech' gas mix.

Jetstreams are good with nitrox. Even "Air Only" regs are good with nitrox up to 40%

My jetstream (the green and yellow one) is good for deco mixes as well.

Trimix isn't something that you need to clean a regulator for. The worry with nitrox is the oxygen, and the possibility of a spark occurring in your tank because of the high 02 percentage of the mix, and the makeup of the lubricant, or other internal portions of the regulator, including the orings.

Spark in tank + high o2 % = boom?

Helium is non-flammable and therefore not a concern.

Virtually any regulator off-the-shelf is good for nitrox mixes below 40% (the only exceptions I know of are regulators made of titanium).

For added safety, you may want to use O2 compatible o-rings and lubricant though.

Poseidon (and other brands) do sell regulators in yellow/green color schemes..which allows them to be designated as deco regulators. They typically come with the correct O2 compatible components from the factory...as they would be used with mixes in excess of 40%.

I was told by a Poseidon rep once that the only regulator thay make that's O2 compatible is the Xtream Duration. He said all other regs were set up for air only.

That being said, I would have no problems using any Poseidon with mixes up to 40%. I have a beat-up old Jetstream I'm gonna rebuild someday and I'll use it with <40% nitrox when I finally dive it.

Poseidon uses metric o-rings and some mighty small ones at that. Metric viton o-rings may be difficult to come by, especially in the sizes Poseidons use, so Poseidons may not be the best choice for hot nitrox mixes.

I don't understand why more service techs don't handle Poseidons. There is nothing scary about them--they're just different. That's all. Once you learn how to tune them they are just like any other reg. and they actually breathe quite well. There is something to be said about a design that hasn't required changing in 40+ years, after all.
