I'm diving Northwest OH quarries and stopped by Portage. Looks like it used to be something. Kind of in disrepair now. 2 questions:

1. Air fill station looked sketchy. Anyone get air from Portage. Is it ok?

2. Quarry itself. What's it like?

Thanks

Been diving Portage for ten years now at least once a year. Air is good, they pump O2 and partial pressure blend. You have to realize the fill station has been there for over 30 years and is in somewhat of a very cool mini museum. It is well maintained and they can fill I think 6 tanks at a time.

I will be there in two weeks or so to dive with the TA Dive club.

Vis after a rain is not so great. It has gone down over the years vis wise. It's not deep (less than 80 feet) but it's good for practice dives.

Jeff and Monica that run the place are two of the nicest people I've ever met and I get treated like family every time I go there. Even better it's like family people actually like. :D

They don't put up with any crap. Even though it's popular with local college students who can get a little rowdy they are just having fun. Any over the top behavior gets one tossed pretty quick.

It's not going to be Caribbean diving or even great lakes when the vis is good. But one of my best dives ever was to scooter the entire perimeter of the quarry at about 18-20 feet. Pretty neat walls and just a nice relaxing 75 minute dive using less than 1400 PSI in a 3000 PSI al80.

Been diving there for 20 years although not recently. Always diver friendly.
