Trying to book a liveaboard between my time in Port Douglas and my time in Cairns. Since the boats leave around 8:30, I'd rather leave from PD than drive 70 km back to Cairns in the morning.

However, I'm having difficulty finding many liveaboard options from PD in general, and NO luck finding a 2d/1n option.

I know there are a ton of options for day trips, but does anyone have any experience with liveaboard options out of PD? Undersea Explorer has a minimum 3d/2n

JP,

Sorry, there are no 2 day / 1 night options out of Port Douglas.

The Great Barrier Reef, although there are many boat options, they are governed by permits and the last boat to liveaboard out of Port Douglas ( Diversity ) ceased operations about 6 or 7 years ago.

For a liveaboard you can surf the net out of Cairns, or day trips from Port however can I suggest that if it was me..... its about viewing different area's and reef locations, therefore I would do 1 day Port, 1 day Cairns and deal with the travel given that the reef is 35 naut miles off the coast and involves 4 hrs boat travel every day anyway. The reef sites differ between these 2, however be careful about which boat you pick from Cairns, as you do not want one great reef site followed by an average one.

Hope you find the answers your looking 4

Kindest regards Andrew

Diversity was a nice trip, we went to Osprey and then to Ribbons, dove with Minkes and the night dives with hunting white tips was terrific, it's too bad they are no longer a choice. My trip was in 2003, so that was 5 years ago. My first choice was MikeBal trip. I tried to reserve it then they said they were full, then we booked Diversity. When we arrived at Cairns we found that the Mike Ball trip had openings with a big discount but since we booked Diversity we were set. It cost us $900US each for 5night 4day trip with Diversity. It was our first Liveaboard, two years latter we took StarDancer in PNG. Thanks to the crew and the great time we had on Diversity aliveaboard trip is always listed as a choice for our next venue.
