I have acute intermittent porphyria. I have just completed my certification dives and am experiencing some pretty severe abdominal and back pains. Are the two connected? Is there anyone out there that dives with porphyria? Thanks Jan

Call DAN, Diver's Alert Network.

They're the leading (if not only) non-profit source of diving medicine knowledge and support.

Sorry to hear about your discomfort.
From "The Physiology and Medicine of Diving" by Bennet & Elliot, under the heading:
DISORDERS WHICH CAN MIMIC DECOMPRESSION ILLNESS

"acute intermittent porphyria usually present with abdominal or back pain, occasionally extremity pain, and weakness, which can sometimes be severe. Sensory abnormalities may occur.....blah blah blah.....

The diagnosis is made by demonstrating elevated porphobilinogen in the urine. Sometimes, darkening of voided urine occurs due to the conversion of porphobilinogen to porphobilin.

So you may want to get a urine test to confirm its not DCI but I would guess its not.
Good luck.
