can anyone enlighten me in the use of a polespear:huh:
do you throw it or simply jab it
do you attach a cord to the end
etc etc etc

The polespear has round rubber "tubing" at one end. I put the band between my thumb and index finger and then reach down the pole as far as I can or as far as the tension of the band will allow. Then you let go of the pole when ready to shoot....

Does that make sense?

pretty much like launching a piece of paper using a rubberband

do you reccomend i attach a rope or something to the spear while i practice

I don't let the spear go completly. I am close enough to the fish to hit it and still hang on to the spear. One tip for you, always swim to the fish, don't pull the fish to you once it's on the spear.

Pole spears are really great because a person has to develop the art of stalking, sneaking up on the critters to get within range for a good shot.
I've used short handled pole spears (about 4' long) with no sling, just drifted with the current 'till over the top of dinner - usually a flounder.

Pole spearing kinda loooks like shooting billards with out a front hand.

Getting the pole moving forward helps before releasing the band, as long as the fish is not easily spooked.

Also a twist in the pole when stretching the rubber will keep a flexible pole from bowing.

I like a Hawaiian sling better than a pole spear, when the water is clear. The sling has better range for bigger fish, IMHO.

But nothing reloads as fast as a pole spear or is as good for dirty water.
