I would like to plan a trip to PNG in 2007 but have no idea what time of year is best to go. Also would like to stay on a live aboard- any recommendations there? The Peter Houghes tour said they travel on the south side of the island in Jan-March. Does anyone have experience there and is it any better or worse than other dive areas?

Hello Pawsaboard, there is always some part of PNG that has good diving, all year. It's quite a large place spread out over 3 seas. My suggestion is that you try to narrow down the things you want to see most and pick the area that has the best chance to find those animals/sights. The Lonely Planet guide is a pretty good place to start and has detailed info about each season's weather.

By south side of the island, I'm guessing you mean New Britan? I have not been to the south coast, but heard that it's good for macro stuff and the scenery, but not so good for big stuff.

As for which liveaboard, I have been on Golden Dawn 4 times and like it best of the 6 I've been on. High crew to guest ratio, only max 10 people(usually much less), great food, active stabilizers for rough crossings, very experienced PNG born captain. Check the website for the schedules and you'll see that GD moves all over PNG. It's the only boat that does. Febrina and Chertan are also good choices. And make sure you do some diving in Port Moreby, it's excellent diving and you'll have to pass through anyway. Happy trails, -Andy

Hi Pawsaboard, over a year ago I posted a please tell me how the different areas in PNG compare, the answers which I found helpful are here
Have a good time, I ended up on Febrina on the North side of New Britian and certainly did.
