Hi folks,

I'm giving my husband a trip for his birthday. He's scuba'd all over hawaii, but he's not been anywhere else. I'm looking for a bright, idealic setting where the people are professional and the dive sites are colorful. Please tell me if you've been on such a trip and what shop you went through, if any. Thanks!!

I got back from Cairns last week, a very unique experience. We saw about every fish and coral I've seen in pet stores as well as 3 kinds of sharks. There are a lot of different boat operators for all levels of experience, but it seemed like most of the operators cater to snorklers and offer intro dives. We didn't get a chance, but the liveaboards were the best deal and were just for divers. We took a day trip w/3 dives for $195, it included lunch and all equipment-it wasn't cheaper if you brought your own. $10 extra for a divemaster guide. Diving is a huge industry there. I didn't see any shore diving around Cairns, but we did shore diving down at Manly Beach outside of Syndney which was really cool too, lots of kelp, weedy sea-dragons and port jackson sharks. We would have liked to have done more diving, but we had to spend time exploring the Austrailian rainforest and outback, with equally fascinating wildlife. There are a ton of dive companies and websites, like cairnsdive.com.au; underwater.com.au; quicksilverdive.com.au; prodive-cairns.com.au. I'm ready to call it quits here and move down under!

I am a travel agent and also a dive travel, Australia, Fiji, Caribbean, and SANDALS Specialist. Where would you be flying from ? When ? How much time will you take for the trip ? What is your budget ? Will you get your own air with frequent flyer seats ? A lot of information is necessary before I could suggest anything. If you want, email me at: wallyaussi@vacation.com

Two options I really enjoyed are:
www.underseaexplorer.com
www.marlinbay.com

The Undersea Explorer is a liveaboard out of Port Douglas, north of Cairns, in Australia. Various trips, all of which are good. Great crew. Educational experience, with lots of show and tell and photo opps. Cabins are spartan but comfortable. Food is great. Shared bathrooms/showers at the back of the boat (I was a little concerned about this at first but everybody became like family. No issue.)

Marlin Bay in Fiji is WONDERFUL. Diving is great. Crews are fantastic. I've heard diving in other areas around Fiji is better, but I thought the diving we had was just incredible. Marlin Bay is one of those places I truly did NOT want to leave. I mean we all tease about it, right? "Let's just not go home. Ha Ha." ...But I did NOT want to go. I actually had a physical feeling of depression as we packed up...

Try just about any Aggressor liveaboard. Their corporate tag line is "give us a week, and we'll change the way you think about diving forever". As much as I hate advertising of this type *groans with regret* I have to admit it is absolutely true!

All the best, James

I have also dived all over the world including the GBR and Coral sea (live aboard) but the best by far was PNG. Walindi on the Island of New Britain or there are two liveaboards out of Walindi that sail the Bismark sea. VERY colorful and great staff.
PM if you need more info.

being in hawaii why not travelling via guam to palau and yap. say 3 to 4 days diving in yap and about 1 week in palau.
in yap i would stay at the traders ridge. in palau if your husand wants to get as many dives as possible under his belt the big blue explorer. want some exotic island? stay at carp its very basic but just by the divesites and has sandy beaches. or do your own diving sagfari on the eclipse a sailing boat for up to 4? guests.

in palau on the main island i would prefere the carolines resort over the "ppr" palau pacific resort.

need more info? just ask
