I don't know what to do, my mother called me last night and invited us to go to Hawaii with them next May and I want to dive while on vacation. Here is my problem I was certified about a year and a half ago and shortly after certification I badly tore my ACL and until about 4 months ago I was still not 100% and have not dove at all and I love it!!! Here is my other problem I had a REALLY bad experience with my LDS class and instructor(he needs to be fired) and prefer not to do business with them again and they are really the only dive shop in the area to take a refresher course from. I have been cleared by my Dr. to dive and really want to be able in May. Please help.

You could find another instructor in your area who works independently. I find it hard to believe there is only one instructor in your area.

You could take a refresher course in Hawaii.

You could find someone in another area to stay with while you take a refresher course there.

The sooner you get started, the sooner you will be finished.

keep in mind that local dive shops are not the sole (or best) source for
instruction in your area. a lot of the best instructors are independents, not
affiliatied with a dive shop.

the easiest thing to do would be to find such an instructor in your area, and
take a refresher course with them.

then, go diving with local guys as much as you can

you should be very ready for May

here's the ScubaBoard forum for the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew;
you could check there both for instructors and buddies in your area:

best of luck

A year and a half is not that long ago. Why do you think you need a refresher class? I went 7 years between dives once and did just fine, you don't forget how to breath. For me, I'd be more concerned with being stuck with my mother for a week.

Whooooooooooa take the mask off your forehead, your ok. LOL Just take a refresher in Hawaii. Tell them in advance so they know what you expect. Have fun and post a trip report when you get back.

If you live in west michigan the Grand Haven High Schools Aquatic Center is open to divers on certain weekends and you can go there and practice your skills.

Some one wanting to refresh there dive skills after any period out of the water are the tell tale signs of a responsible diver and should not be discouraged from doing so.
I have seen people like your self not willing to refreash there skills before......generally your the ones we are recovering from depth and placing in body bags.

It is people like yourself that give the sport a bad rap......I would not be boasting on a public forum about your bad habits.

Be a responsible diver and live to dive another day

You are right on the money. Refresher courses for anyone who has been out of the water any long period (say 6 months or more) are not a bad idea and should be encouraged. I am a diver, AOW, not an instructor and have not been paid for this endorsement.

Please note, this diver was on the non-diving list shortly after certification. So we are talking a diver with I would guess 5-10 dives. With that low number of dives, the skills are not yet "set" and need polishing and memory is one thing that also need refreshing.

On another note, I currently have 231 dives logged since May 2001. If I went 1 year without diving I would take a refresher course, but that is me and every diver must make their own decisions. You made a decision not to take a refresher after 7 years of not diving, and that is your call. I would consider that a risk not worth taking. Also consider in 7 years, things and knowledge of SCUBA can and does change. Example: Ascent rate since I started diving has gone from a recommended 60 feet per minute to 30 feet per minute. Read http://www.scubadiving.com/training/lessons_for_life/out_of_practice,_out_of_luck/ for an account of another diver who skipped the refresher course.

I would wager you also did not get your gear serviced before you resumed diving either. Read http://www.scubadiving.com/training/lessons_for_life/the_danger_of_unserviced_gear/ for more on that story. Just my $0.02.

Or in other words, just because you can, does not mean you should.

I had a compleet acl replacement in August and made 4 dives mid November with no problem. I hope you have the same outcome. As for your other problem I would just go to Hawaii and do the refresher there unless you are planning to dive locally before Hawaii. I that case find an instructor you like.

Call some dive operators in Hawaii and ask about doing a refresher while doing your dive. Most good operators can and will oblige. (PM me if you need the name of a good operator in Oahu or on the Big Island.)
