Welcome to the board!

That said, you need to be > 10 yrs old (some agencies have 8 yrs, but I have issues with that); you need to be able to swim; an instructor; $$; the ability to read course materials; watch boring powerpoint slides (assuming that powerpoint is used in class); etc. The training consists of 3 (some might say 4) sorts of activities: Book work, motor skills in a swimming pool, motor skills in open water. (The 4th activity is equipment training, which I consider to be motor skills; e.g. clockwise to close a valve; counterclockwise to open valve; how to clean a BCD and regulator; etc.)

PADI is one of many agencies that certifies Scuba divers; most shops/resorts will recognize certification from other agencies. YMCA, NAUI, & SSI are the other agencies that pop into my mind, but I'm sure I'm forgetting others...

Your profile says your mother is a Scuba instructor? Why not ask her? ;)

Your mother, having been a scuba instructor, should be very helpful in giving you some insight as to what, if any, physical training you should be doing along with direction in pursuing your course work.

Welcome to the ScubaBoard!
