Plaza Las Glorias will be reopening on March 15th as Cozumel Palace, all inclusive of course. This info is per Padi Travel who recently was made aware of the extension from late December to mid March.

Then they need to pull their inventory from Pleasant Holidays, Worry Free Vacations, etc., because they show availability for January. FYI - just priced land only with Worry Free Vacations (MLT), January 15-22, price is $2494.00, that's roughly $356/night. :eek_2:

Christi - do you know if they plan to change the pool/outdoor seating areas? That was a favorite place for post-dive swimming, calamari and drinks. I assume we can still do that even if the place is AI and we are not staying there?

Christi:
They are STILL in the gutting process, so I knew there was no way they were going to meet the December 24th goal. Rumor has it that it will be $300+ per night, AI only. They will need to make ALOT of updates and changes to make it a $300+ a night hotel.

Thanks Matt for the update! I hadn't even heard that, but I was off the island for a couple of weeks and haven't caught up on everything yet :)

ROFLMAO Christi.............you got that right!!!

It appears that they are...but still cannot make out what they are going to do to the pool area. They have torn down all of the palapas, including the restaurant, so we'll see.

I highly doubt you will be able to go hang out there as a non-guest when it reopens. It is not going to be the same management or even the same company. Plaza Las Glorias was not an all-inclusive, so anyone could go on the property and use the facilities as long as they bought something.

I suspect that you will be able to buy a daypass for Cozumel Palace, but with nightly rates of $300+, I bet the daypasses will be in the $80 to $100 per day range. Daypasses at Allegro and Occidental Grand are $65. Daypasses at the Playa del Carmen and Cancun area Palace resorts are $100+.

In my personal opinion, I think Palace resorts is in for a rude awakening with their price points. They will have customers no doubt, but I don't predict their occupancy rate being over 60 or 70% at any given time. Cozumel IS NOT Playa del Carmen or Cancun. Most of the people coming here are divers and aren't looking for fancy high dollar, overpriced resorts. Due to the location and higher quality of food and ammenities that Palace resorts has the reputation for I think they can absolutely justify higher rates than the other AI's, but $300+ a night is excessive in my opinion.

I'll keep a eye on it and keep my ears open. If I hear or see anything noteworthy, I'll post it.

$356/night? YOW! I sure won't be staying there...

Christi, I was thinking the same thing. Most divers that come to Cozumel save all year for one or two trips there a year and I couldn't imagine dropping that kind of money to stay there.

Actually you would be very surprised to know the rate of non divers going to Cozumel is quite high.

Several 'travelers' just want a new place to go to. They have already been to Cancun, Playa, etc. Cozumel is just a 'new place in Mexico' they haven't been to. And several passengers from the cruise ships are non divers. They are looking for an upscale place to plant their booties while on the island for the day.

I doubt they will have much trouble filling the place.

Some people (non divers) want to travel to all the Palace Resorts. And cruisers will buy day passes as the ship will sell them.

I'll be in Coz next month. I plan on peeking in and seeing what's going on.

I agree with Christie, for divers this is high. But, not for the rest of the world.

I think you misunderstood Natasha. I know there will be people willing to pay this price, but not enough to keep the place full. I also know that the number of non-divers coming to Cozumel is increasing, but Cozumel still is not the market for a $356 per night room. The Presidente is the closest in price and it is still $100 a night less with the highest rates. Playa Azul runs about $180 per night and Iberostar is the next AI down at about $150 per night. I will not be surprised at all if the prices go down after the first 6 months to a year after they realize what the Cozumel market will bear. I think they'll need to drop their prices by $150 a night to be competitive.

I do expect the prices to be cut in half during low season. It would be great if they stay that way year round. Hopefully they will!
:)

Even at half the quoted rate, it's over twice my budget.
