This isn't exactly a Cozumel question, but here goes anyway. The fair one and I will be down in Coz in about a week, and are contemplating taking our Saturday off and going over to Playa and renting a car to visit Tulum and such. Sharky was kind enough to give me some advice on this, and he said just to rent a car when we get to Playa. It occurred to me, however, that this is perilously close to spring break time, and I wonder what car availability will be like if we just walk up to them? What are costs like for a small car for one day, and should we reserve ahead of time? Who do you recommend? We will have our adult daughter with us, and I am just beating the weeds to flush out any last minute snakes. Thanks for any insights. Woody

We used Easyway last month based on a recommendation of a SB member and I was very happy with the service. They were very responsive to emails and although we used the Cancun office I noticed they have one in Playa as well. We squeezed 4 big guys with rebreathers into a Vw Pointer wagon. We may have bottomed out a couple of times.

I rented a car in PDC during spring break. I don't remember if I did it a day in advance or the same day. We stay in PDC so I just walked up to the counter. There's a couple agencies right by the ferry pier. Allow extra pick-up time. In our case they (same guy behind the counter) retreived the car and could only get within a block or so for us.

Have to agree with DET, it took me an hour from the time I walked into the Hertz office until I actually got into the car. However Tulum is great! Take your swim suit. BTW stay away from the time share guys who will try to rent you a car.

The best site for car rentals along the coast is Can-Do Maps and travel guides. They have a pretty complete section on car rental agencies. We have used Executive and Alamo without a problem. On our next trip we will be trying Cancun Rent A Car.

We just got back from Coz and rented a car one day in Playa Del Carmen. We went with Budget for $50. If you're going to Tulum, take the time to go to Coba', very cool.

We always use Isis Rentadora in Cozumel, and they have a Playa location not far from the ferry. Very low prices, at least on the island (I haven't checked out the Playa prices), and they include both liability and damage insurance. We're paying $35/day. That's the "internet" price - if you walk in they show you a much higher price. Some cruseros ahead of us paid $65/day for the same car.

I would suggest taking the van that is located at 4th Street and 30th, the cost is $3.00 or 30pesos to go to Tulum and will be waiting at the entrance when you return. The price is actually a lot cheaper than renting a car. We just returned fro Playa Del Carmen and had a great time and didn't have to rent a car the whole time we were there. The taxis within Playa are $3.00 anywhere and the buses are cheap. The bus to Cancun is $8.00 or 80 pesos. Have fun.

Yeah, I thought about that, but we will need the freedom to go and visit a couple of the native craftsmen that have been recommended to me for local handicrafts, so it looks like a small car will be the way to go. I just hope that I don't have any problems renting at the last minute, as I cannot say with certainty exactly which day we will be going over there... Oh well, we leave on Monday morning (2 days:D) so this will all be moot soon. Will let you all know how we came out later. Woody
