Is better to stay and dive out of Play Del Carmen or Stay and dive out of Akumal?

My personal preference is Akumal. It's much smaller, more laid back and quieter. It's right in between PDC and Tulum, about 20 minutes drive each way. From either place you can do cenotes, take a day trip over to Coz, or do some ocean diving out of either one as well. The ocean diving in Akumal was ok but not spectacular. Avg about 75ft, nice reefs, saw baraccuda, big turtles, the largest morays I've seen, shark, rays and the usual assortment of tropicals, coral, fans etc.

If you've looking for accommodations or general info, www.locogringo.com is a good resource. You can book condo's, villas, houses, hotels through the site.

In Akumal we've stayed at Vista del Mar www.akumalinfo.com (condo, not hotel, the htl rms are very very small), and did ocean dives with Akumal Dive Adventures. It's the same owners so if you prebook a few dives you get 15% off on the dives, and 10% off on accommodations.

If you want a more quiet or less crowded atmosphere then go to Akumal. If after diving or on non diving days you want something to do then Playa is your place. You may be able to get a better price on hotels in Playa than Akumal.

Thanks for your help.

Are the caves more accesible from Playa or Akumal? Reef Diving better in playa or akumal? We are weighing the pros and cons of each area to decide where to stay.

My preference would be Akumal. Dos Ojos is 5 -10 min away with others close by, Playa 20 min north. Akumal Is much more laid back and centrally located with everyting nearby including the reef right off shore. From Akumal if you want to hit Coz plan on it being a day trip due to a ferry ride.

rd,

We stayed at Barcelo Maya last year, and all-inclusive about 20 min south of PDC. It was April vacation week, and although the resort was full, it never felt crowded. Dressel Divers has a dock on the property.

Here's a site that has more than you'll need to know about the resort, and a little about the area. http://www.unofficial-barcelo-maya.com

I know some divers prefer more economical digs, but you can get good last minute deals in summer season if you are comfortable planning things on relatively short notice.

Have fun!
