Planning a 1 week trip to Cairns

Hello,

Im planning a trip to Cairns this coming July and would like to know if the locals have any advice on the following considering that I am on limited backpacker budget.
1. Accomodations
2. Dive operations
3. Places to eat
My objective are the following
1. Dive the great barrier reef for 2 days
2. Tour the city

If you're going with the soon to be Mrs. Axua, try Lizard Island... but its pricey... $1,000+ per nite for a nice secluded island...

Cairns has hundreds of backpacker hostels. The same applies to dive operators, there is one on just about every corner. if you go to www.divingcairns.com you will find a large selection of dive operators with itineraries, prices, etc. there are also thousands of eateries everywhere in cairns, macdonalds, hungry jacks etc etc. cairns is a small city there are no beaches, just a palm fringed mud flat

How much you wanna spend? May I suggest going a little further North to Port Douglas? I think it's nicer than Cairns (not that Cairns is not a cool place).

As for dive ops - go for the smaller ops, stay away from Quicksilver unless you like sardine diving
