Piston vs Balanced Diaphram

Please offer some advice to a novice. I want an easy breathing reg that will be suitable as I progress towards tec and deeper diving. Can anyone offer advice on a balanced diaphram system vs a piston system. Is there really a difference. mares v-16 proton vs Atomics z1.
