That is a blanket octopus...very unusual here this close to shore.
 
Thanks Scuba E. It was really breathtaking to see this thing actually swimming. The dive operation manager said she's never seen one in her 20 years of diving the Keys.
 
Thank you for putting up these amazing photographs! I love octopuses of all sorts, and this one is stunning. It had to have been a fabulous experience to see him in the water. Thank you for sharing it.
 
I ended up sending the photos to Channel 10 news. I had 3 reporters email me and asked to do a story on it. They came to my home last night and filmed me. It's going to be on the news tonight. If any of you are in S. Florida, check it out, it should be on either 6pm or 11pm today.
