Phouket to Tawau - Help a SE Asia Newbie!

Hey there folks,

I'm lucky to be diving at Sipadan on March 13th and 14th (woop, woop!!)

The dive shop (Scuba Junkie) will pick me up (most likely) at Tawau on the 11th or 12th.

I need to get from Phouket to Tawau, likely via KL or Kota Kinabalu. Any advice on the route?

Also, should I be booking flights now or would it be easier/cheaper to just walk into the airport, pay and hop on?

Wow - diving Sipadan will be fantastic for you!

You can fly via KL or Singapore to get a flight then to Tawau. Check out Air Asia's web site for routes, availability and prices.

The cheapest prices now are typically booking online in advance. If you leave it to the last minute the flight prices tend to be more expensive.

You can get a bus direct from Phuket to KL (via Penang). I did a simular journey from Koh Tao to KL, and it was easy. Go to a tourism office and just ask for a ticket.

It took 1 day on the bus to get to Penang and a further day to KL. I stayed in Penang for 2 nights and KL for 2 nights during the journey (because I wasn't in a rush and it was nice to break up the journey with some exploration).

The bus journey was cheap and I enjoyed the sight-seeing from the bus

I booked my flight to Tawau online with Air Asia.
