Hello, all-

I'm starting the process of researching what sort of underwater photography system to make my first, and have started sifting through all the posts on the board.... Wow...

I was browsing at a bookstore yesterday, and saw several digital photography & film photography magazines. Could anyone recommend one or two of each? Seemed overwhelming....

Thanks,
Jim

Most of the magazines out there are completely suberted by the companies that advertise in them.... don't rely on their gear reviews.

Popular Photography is expecially bad as are many of those like it...

Darkroom Technique was a kickin mag... too bad it is gone.

Outdoor Photography is good (pics at least)
Photographic Technique (more advanced)
View Camera magazine (great pics.. geared towards large format photographs)

dunno about for digi

Aside from the ad dollars magazines have another problem, they're frequently way behind time. If you do your research online you will be more up-to-date and usually get less bias (or it is easier to detect).

For excellent infos on cameras and news go to:
http://www.dpreview.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html
Those two sides are alike, and offer more detail than many manuals, and more tests than many need. But the data, samples and plenty of pics are there.
The latter also features tests of some printers and other peripherals.

For UW photography try:
http://wetpixel.com/
http://www.digideep.com/
Again there are reviews and general info, as well as like minds.

Magazines toward Digital, I really enjoy PCPhoto at:
www.pcphotomag.com

They've always got How2_s on photo, digital editing, etc...
I enjoy it... plus the links above should keep you busy for a while...

Hope that helps..

You might want to take a look at http://www.uwpmag.com which is an online (PDF) formatted magazine dedicated to underwater photography. It's free and you can download all the back issues.

There are 18 issues of UW Photography Magazine currently online. Issue 18 was available as of 7 April 04 and has a good article for beginners looking for digital cameras. It is titled "Beginners Guide to Digital Underwater Photography"
If you register when you visit the web site http://www.uwpmag.com you will get an email when each issue is available for downloading which is every other month.

Jim,

I have been into photography as a significant hobby for many years. I just got into scuba this milenium, and I just got a digital camera at Christmas 2003, so my background is much more in the 35mm and Medium format film areas.

I can't recommend any magazines for digital photography, but I can make some recommendations for film. There are only two magazines that I currently subscribe to:
=> PhotoGraphic
=> Outdoor Photography

I have suscribed to PhotoGraphic for probably 10-15 years. It was always the best of the consumer photo magazines. The ads are there but they don't overwhelm the content as is some other magazines. The articles are informative and useful. I even recommend PhotoGraphic on my own personal (non-commercial) web site in the photo section.

I have only subscribed to Outdoor Photography for 4 or 5 years now, but I keep it because it has some really stunning images in every issue, and they have some good articles about outdoor photography.

Modern Photography, Popular Photography and others have been tried and discarded for too many ads, and too little content. I have also tried American Photo and several other high end mags. None have ever provided me with the same level of value as the two I mentioned above. Just my opinions.

I need to find a good magazine for digital myself, but since you asked for both, these are my suggestions for film. I hope that helps.
