Looking for a recommendation on a PFD versus the standard snorkel vest. I find the the vest a hindrance to diving down and it rides up as well. Want the added security of a PFD when out alone. we travel with our own equipment so something that's practical.

Any help on what to buy and where to get it would be appreciated.

We are avid snorkelers and have been using this type of vest since it fits snug, doesn't ride up, and you only inflate it if and when you need to. I usually inflate just a little and the husband doesn't inflate his since he likes to dive down but if we are out for any length of time, he will inflate his. They pack very flat and don't weight very much. I like the loops near the zipper to attach the strap from my underwater video housing and the pockets are great for storing an extra camera.

I'm wondering how you would ever be able to submerge while wearing a PFD. After all, they are designed specifically to keep you on the surface.

I use inflatable PFDs on my boat, but once one is inflated, you have to replace the canister. Blowing it up by mouth seems very impractical.

I made my own out of a gym bag.
The camelback can hold water to drink or be inflated with modest, yet noticable effect.
Can be inflated/ deflated at will via the drinking tube.
The fit was more like a military chest rig than a vest. can be worn over the stomach or around on your lower back, nicely out of the way if the camelback is deflated of air.
It prototyped well, some kinks aside, but with use the material wore out and a second version is in the works.
