Looking for a recommendation on a PFD versus the standard snorkel vest. I find the the vest a hindrance to diving down and it rides up as well. Want the added security of a PFD when out alone. we travel with our own equipment so something that's practical.

Any help on what to buy and where to get it would be appreciated.

If you are referring to a "personal floatation device" I don't see how you could possibly think it would be less of a hindrance than a snorkle vest. A pfd is made with material which encapsulates air. It is bulky and cannot be deflated. Inflatable models are made to automatically inflate when immersed. They are costly to re-arm for future use.

If the snorkle vest rides up, you might try attaching a crotch strap to hold it down. Many diving BC's, especially backplate wing models, utilize crotch straps for positioning and scooter use.

Do you deflate your snorkle vest before free diving? Do you wear weights to free dive? Don't you float pretty well in salt water?
