If you wait for the next big thing to come along, you'll never buy anything. Given how new the Petrel 2 is, I doubt there will be an entirely new model (Petrel 3) coming out for quite awhile. I have two Petrel 1s and LOVE THEM!!

waterboys comment is not true, but it is the best computer on the market right now.

That said Shearwater has said they are not planning on a replacement for the Petrel at this point in time. The Predator was redesigned due to lack of screen availability so it had to be somewhat altered anyway. Right now the Petrel is the platform for their DiveCAN system so I doubt you'll see any significant change in the near future *3-5 years*

Is it worth buying a Petrel 2 now or is there something new on the horizon worth waiting for?

Can you think of anything about the Petrel you would like to see improved? The screen is great, and just the right size for me--I wouldn't want a computer with either a larger or smaller screen. The form factor is pretty much just a box--the esthetics are what they are. But that "box" seems to be built like a tank. The sensors are simple. The rest of the hardware is simple. So everything else comes down to the software, which you would be able to update as Shearwater releases updates. I can't see myself looking enviously at another computer for many years. My wife and I each have one, and when I have the budget, we will each get another as a backup.

The only thing I'd like is the screen to fill up more of the overall space. Keep the overall size, but the screen being a little bigger doesn't hurt anyone. Hell, I wouldn't mind a Predator-sized computer with the screen almost the full face.

issue there is the cost of small bezels in the computer. It would increase the cost quite a bit to get a larger screen in there and not need the big bezel. Look at tablets/laptops for similar analogy.

Petrel is the only dive computer that is Scuba Board approved :snorkel2:

That's technically inaccurate. A lot of us still love the predator, and refuse to switch to the petrel.

Ha ha. Good one: :d

Since the hardware is pretty cutting edge and Shearwater offers free software upgrades to their customers I think this computer will be ion top of the heap for a while.
