We are sailing on the Paul Gauguin out of Papeete on August 27th. Anyone else from SB on this boat? Can anyone tell us what the water temperatures have been recently in FP (Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, etc..)? Thanks.

Welcome to SB Dan! I am SO looking forward to the trip -- just 4 more weeks!

We just got back from land based in Bora Bora, Moorea and Rangiroa last night. Water temps were 79-80, and air temps were mid 80's.

I wore a 5mm wetsuit and a 3mm hood, but I get cold very easily. My buddy wore a 3mm and was quite alright. He also wore a neoprene cap.

All the DM's were wearing 5mm wetsuits & hoods.......

Thanks for the update. Where did you stay on Moorea and which shop did you dive with on Moorea. We leave on the 20th and will on Moorea for 4 days.

We stayed at Moorea Pearl and dived with Top Dive. They picked us up by van, and dropped us off by boat at our resort's pier.

I started this thread and we just got back from our 10 day cruise on the MS Paul Gauguin yesterday. Overall it was the best cruise experience we have had. The service was exceptional, and the dive staff was great.

We managed to get in 11 dives, which is not live-aboard volume but good for a traditional cruise ship. The "marina" on the back of the boat was really convenient. Water temps were 78-79 degrees which was about 3 degrees colder than we have experienced on past trips. I wore my 3 mm full suit and was comfortable, while my wife wishes she had taken her vest along with her 3 mm. Most other divers used the boat's equipment including shorties, and were cold.

Thanks for the report! We're getting very excited about our trip. I'll be sure to pack the 5mil with the 2 mil hooded vest.

Was all the diving the stuff listed in the "off the boat excursions" pamphlet, or did you do any plain old diving off the ship?

TSM,

Make sure you do a drift dive in Tiputa Pass when the Gauguin puts in to Rangiroa. Out of all the diving we did on Rangiroa, Moorea and Bora Bora, the Pass diving in Rangiroa is far superior. If the Gauguin puts in to Fakarava, you can do Pass diving as well. It is a wild ride!

The reefy stuff, is typical reefy stuff.....nothing remarkable to the well traveled diver, especially since Tahiti is not a dive destination, outside of the Pass diving of course!

We dived with Top Dive on all islands and saw many divers from the Sea Star and the Gauguin passing through the shops. We also saw the Gauguin from our bungalow deck in both Rangiroa and Bora Bora, no docks, only tenders....so keep that in mind.

I had my 5mm and hood and wished I had brought my hooded vest instead of just the hood......

Here's a picture of us sailing a Hobie Cat around the Gauguin between Bora Bora and Motu Tupua, I'm taking the picture.....
