Currently I keep both. Mainly I keep the paper for training purposes incase my instructor wants to see it. With that being said..... How many times have you been asked to show your dive log? And for what reason? And for you instructors, is there ever a reason for you to ask for it?

Never - not once. Even when I was SDI certified for Solo.

i have been asked to produce a dive log a few times in the Florida keys and in Hawaii over the years......but most times they just want to see my "C" card..

Not once, even when i started my DM course

Whenever possible I try to get a "reference" when diving somewhere for the first time. I am lucky enough to have a pretty diverse group of divers in my circle and someone always seems to know someone so when I go somewhere new, a friend will usually contact the operator and vouch for me. I have had to show my log book a few times but these days it is nowhere near up to date (everything is on my Shearwater desktop log).

never used paper after my initial OWT where we were required to fill it out as part of our grade *college PE course*

digital since then, much easier to keep track of. Of the cards I have, I only carry 3. If my Nitrox diver card won't get me somewhere, I pull out my technical cave card. Never had it be an issue, but I carry my AI card just in case. Never been asked to produce a log.

I have not used a paper log in over a decade-- all electronic, even any training dives.

I have been asked for cards in two situations:
a) when travelling with my family and booking dives in places that do not know me. Usually asked for as part of filling out indemnity forms.
b) going on some local charters that want to ensure at least AOW certification for deeper dives. Doesn't always happen, but it does sometimes. Sometimes they just want to see logged dives in similar conditions (i.e. deep and cold).

And I have been able to use scanned images of my cards that I keep on my phone and iPad. Not sure if they are always accepted by those wanting to see proof of certification, but they have been accepted in my case.

We were asked to show our dive logs when we dove in Byron Bay, in Australia, ten years ago. Since that, only c-cards.
