Hi,

Ok.. so dream trip to Palau and Yap... and I have 2 options:

6 Days Diving Palau / 4 Days Diving Yap

OR

11 Days Diving in Palau

Any thoughts?

Also what's the weather conditions like in September??

Thanks

I have been reading that it is low season, rains a bit (i live in Thailand for 2 years) can cope with diving in the rain and it also says there is still a lot of sunshine - does bad weather limit access to dive sites? What can I expected? do you have further information please

In late July, August & Sept the typhoons spawn in Palau that head up to Philippines, Guam etc....you are rolling the dice to go in September.

I like Palau a lot better than Yap and you can always see Mantas up at Devil fish city or usually on various dives around Palau. But if you get that one dive in Yap with the 25+ Mantas...that would be a great site to see....I've only known a couple of people who have ever seen that.

I was in palau in May & was told that mid Nov-Dec is a great time to go to Palau.
Dive guide on liveaboard said lots of sharks & Mantas Nov/Dec.Does anybody know if this is good info.
I have read elsewhere that Sept/Oct is not a good time to visit Palau.

I did not see any Mantas in May but sea conditions/weather was great.

I talked to a group of divers when i was in Palau who had just come from Yap and they said they did not see any Mantas at Yap.

There is enough great dive sites in palau for 11 days. If you can get good flight connections i would would do both. However Palau is likely to be better.

We happened to do 6 dive days Palau (on the Aggressor) and 4 dive days Yap. I enjoyed Yap a lot and it was nice to mix it up a bit, especially when it's generally an easy add-on as far as flights. (Although the flight times suck and the Yap airport is awful especially in the middle of the night, not unsafe just a lousy place to be.)

It's always cool to see mantas, but I think it's a shame there is so much focus on them in Yap. We did see some mantas though the viz was pretty bad at the time. I wouldn't have been happy going there just to see that, but I've been fortunate to have much better manta encounters other places. YMMV. The mandarin fish dive was interesting, although we actually got a better look at them snorkeling during the day while on a kayak trip in Palau. But we did some dives on the outer walls of Yap which were great and I actually liked better than a lot of the dives we did in Palau. There were even lots of interesting critters to be found on patchy reefs near some of the manta sites. What I don't know is how often the dive ops normally do the other dives - I suspect not much if they've got boats full of customers that want to see mantas, maybe more often if people have seen their share already. I was with a group so we controlled where a couple of boats went. If I was going back there not with a group I'd want to get the answer to that, and it might determine my choice of dive op.

Palau has very tropical weather - it rains a bit every day, the dry season has passing showers each day...... the rainy season has heavy downpours and may rain all day from what I was told. That is why some dive ops don't even run during Sept.
We were told that Aug-Oct are bad times for the diving due to all the rain. We were just there this past Dec and we had rain all day one day, and passing showers a few other days but never lost a dive. But then, we were on a liveaboard and only 5 minute boat ride from dive sites. I expect those coming from Koror on day boats would have been miserable and cold as the rides are so long.

If you are going that far I'd recommend a stop in Yap but I think I'd go with 7 day diving Palau / 3 days diving in Yap.

check your flights as when we went to Yap a 2yrs ago (april) the Palau flight had to land at Yap for passanger pickup so you might as well throw in a few days if you can

we stayed at Manta Ray Bay Hotel & Yap Divers in Micronesia - diving where the mantas dive and was very very happy with the set up. They had 3 dives per day plus a twilight mandarin fish dive and the facilities were great.

We went to Yap for the mantas & got our manta fill. i wouldnt travel all that way again just for Yap but if you are in the area and can afford it you might as well stop over

cheers
