That's a bummer! Playa Palancar is my favorite. I'll be stopping by many times on my trip anyway, even if SI's aren't an option. Chilling out on their hammocks in the afternoon is a long standing tradition!
 
I understand the pier is left over from a development that fell through after the damage from Gilbert 33 years ago. It also withstood Wilma. The last few times I was on it the exposed and corroded rebar and damaged concrete were getting pretty severe. It is to bad, I have always enjoyed it.
edit addition: It was starting to look like a horizontal version of a condo structural column in south Florida :(
 
Are they or were they still charging boat to stop there to support the 'new' project?
Yea and very few boats were willing to pay. Not sure if the illegal resort project was still proceeding in the area directly south.
