I am a bit confused about which dive intruction would be better. Is there a difference and if so what?

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Me first...

Instruction is about the instructor, not the agency!

A great PADI instructor is better than a crappy SSI instructor. And vice-versa!

I asked the same question when I was trying to decide which cert agency to use and which shop to go to. I rec'd a book full of answers all based on the opinion of the sender.

What I discovered is that the instructor makes all the diference, what he/she teaches and how they go about it is what you should concern yourself with. Take some time and talk to the instructors at the shop you are concidering.

One real important thing to discuss is what all the cost are. Don't allow any leeway.

Your best bet for quality OW instruction is a private instructor or auditing a university class. I haven't run across any decent LDS instruction out there (although I'm sure it must exist, it's just somewhat rare). I am sure there are many people reading this forum that can help you find a great OW instructor although South Dakota might be a challange.

Remember, generally you get what you pay for and $250 doesn't buy a whole lot.

With SSI you'd have to collect badges before you take AOW. With PADI you can take AOW, then collect the badges.

Anything else is simply a pizzing contest.

About the only difference is PADI Instructors may teach without being affiliated with a dive shop, whereas SSI Instructors are required to be associated with a shop. They both teach basicaly the same course standards. Go talk to the instructor, ask questions, and see how your personalities match. You will learn more from an Instructor that you can "connect" with.

edit: don't know what I did but posted twice. Sorry..

The 1st thought I had after reading part of your post was who teaches these private lessons & the university ones??...My experience in this is a LDS instructor.....Sounds like you might get the same guy/gal.......

It is about the instructor but that's because the agencies are useless. If the agency contributed anything meaningful to the class then the agency would matter. Of course, you almost have to wonder about an instructor who is willing to pay (and have you pay) an agency that doesn't matter. Can we still call him/her a good instructor?

Why would a good instructor want to go through the trouble of designing a good course and let some agency, who doesn't matter, put their name on the card?

If the agency doesn't matter, why should they be the ones who set the standards?

Why bother with them at all if they don't matter?

My opinion is that we should completely ignore all the agencies that don't matter (because they don't matter) and the instructors who peddle their cards (because they want you to pay an agency who doesn't matter). Instead, look for instructors who are good enough to know the difference between an agency that matters and one that doesn't.
