The person who was going to be my dive buddy for classes just bailed (busy schedule). Someone else is interested in taking classes with me, but their local dive shop has SSI training. I'm only familiar with PADI. IS there any testing differences in the 2?

If you like the vibe in the shop and you like the instructor then go for it. SSI or PADI really don't make much difference, you certification is valid around the world either way. The two programs will teach you same skills using slightly different methods but you will learn the same content. It really boils down to the instructor and the shop.

Also know that you're not locked into one agency. I did my OW with SSI because the LDS that I liked at the time did their training through them. That store closed and I've done the rest of my training (AOW, Rescue Nitrox) through PADI. There was no issue in taking PADI courses with an SSI OW cert.
