Any BSAC instructors on the board? I'd think i might like to get my BSAC instructors cert, as i really like the depth of knowledge BSAC go into on their courses.

Looked at this myself, was told by the ssac (scottish BSAC equivalent) that as an MSDT instructor I'd be going in as a sports diver as they didn't recognise the majority of the padi certs, this has kinda put me off but if I'm wrong in this I'd be interested in the cross over for the same reasons as scubafreak

I did a cross over with BSAC (wait for this) in the Red Sea at Camel in Sharm in 97, I did start off in the course as a BSAC Advanced diver to start with so I can't comment about the actual cross over for every branch but do know PADI has a agreement with BSAC stating equivalency levels and as such is available from Bristol.
Any region can do as they feel as its a club based system but you would do well to contact the regional rep or HQ the DO's can be very feudal in there own interpret ion as they see it.
BSAC diving and instructing grades are separate branches that causes some confusion.
However divemaster crosses over as dive leader (with a few theory lectures and practicals such as dsmb use and so on).
What you need is the SALT table:

Seems fairly straight forward in explanation, after the few lectures and open water crossover you'll join as dive grade "dive leader". Due to differences in the syllabus you need the lectures on use of BSAC 88 tables (even if nobody uses them these days youre expected to be able to teach them so know them), BSAC structure and a few other things. Open water you'll need to demonstrate a decompression dive, DSMB use and a few other things.
From there you do the instructor foundation course (2 days) and are then given the open water notes and pack. After logging 12hrs open water teaching you can then cross over to become the instructor.
This skips the theory instructor exam and practical instructor exam stages it seems so is quicker than simply doing the entire thing again.

Yes some local DOs may be unaware but that isnt an excuse and HQ will tell them what to do.
Crossover from PADI instructor to BSAC is easy, ive just done it.
You send a cheque for £15 to bsac for the induction instructor notes along with proof of padi qualification (IE examination pass certificate etc) and have to have attended an instructor foundation course. You also need to be a member of bsac.
The 12hrs teaching time thing has been dropped.
So at current prices youd pay £15 for the notes, about £80 for IFC (2 day course) and £45 a year for bsac membership. Thats about £140 to complete assuming nothing to start with.
In my case i was already a bsac member, had already attended an IFC so just had to pay £15.
