Hey Everyone,

I just got involved at a LDS here in Germany, looking at doing their DM program for $800, and then their OWSI. I just now found out about renewal fees through PADI in researching different shops DM courses. I couldn't find how much an OWSI renewal is per year. Also, if you're an instructor, do you also have to hold an CPR/EFR Instructor cert, and pay that along with your OWSI? I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I could have my OWSI by May...My main question is this: If I'm planning on travelling for a couple of years before I work at a shop, should I just wait until closer to that time to take my courses so I'm not paying fees to PADI for no reason? The course itself is cheap though, and based off the conversations I've had with the instructors, it's a solid program. Just looking for some outside input. Thanks.

Answers,
1. Not Sure about the EU but in Canada, it's about $300 per year plus insurance ($500/yr)
2. You do not have to be EFR but if you choose to it's about $100/yr
3. You won't be able to apply for teaching status as a DM until you show proof of insurance and completion of the course.

I'd wait as long as possible before applying to save money, it can literally be done just before you need it.

Save all your monies. DM and OWSI renewal is the same, $252 in the US. Insurance will set you back about $800.

No, DM annual dues/renewal are about half of OWSI annual dues.

I haven't paid them in many years. Thanks for the correction.

Yes, wait. And, that is not just because of fees, although I see no reason to pay them if you are not teaching. Completing the OWSI, and then not teaching for two years is simply not a good idea. Your skills at the end of OWSI are, like everything else, a bit perishable. Much of what you learn in the OWSI is reinforced and solidified by engaging in actual teaching. You will lose some of the benefit you gain in the course, if you are not going to be using what you learned for that length of time immediately afterward.
