PADI or STC/SSI

Although I have done some snorkeling in the past and have always wanted to SCUBA I find that now that I am finally looking into it seriously there is a lot more about this sport than I first realized. One of the most perplexing startup questions is which is the better certification to get, PADI or STC/SSI. Any help on describing the differences, pro's and con's would be greatly helpful. I thank you for your time on this matter.

The differences between the agencies are not significant enough to worry you at this stage. Do some research and find a high quality instructor in your area and you will be in good shape. You may also want to do a forum search for this topic. It is a common one that has many posts giving details.

Agencies dont really matter as the instructor is the most important part of your trainning. Ask questions to the instructors and pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

I have to agree with Joe. If you mean STC as one of the LDS in Amarillo? Besides that I prefer SSI too.

As with most people the agency does not matter to much. Take a look at the link Mark had on his post as it has some great questions to ask instructors.

Personally I like PADI (also got a slight bias).
