I am new to this board, so HELLO to everyone. My intro will be on the intro thread. Anyhow, I just received my new card from PADI for Enriched Air Diver. My question is that on the paper that it was glued to is a large bold print that states "PADI VALIDATION CARD." Then, below that in a smaller box is a statement that reads "This is NOT a certification card"
What exactly does THAT mean? I thought that I was getting certified to dive Nitrox up to 40% and the card was my certification to show to the dive shop for fills. Maybe I am just confused on the terminology here. Can someone clarify?
Thanks,
Joker11
"Any dive where I come back alive is a good dive."

EAN is not proof that you are a certified diver. But it does qualify you to buy and dive EAN mixes up to 40%. So you still have to carry an OW card or better in addition to the EAN card.

Silly distinction, I know, since you had to prove certification to get the EAN card.

You might want to rethink your signature line--dive is not too good if your buddy does not also come back alive, fer sure fer sure.

Mine doesn't have that language. But I guess it means that the card doesn't certify any particular level of dive skill, though you obviously have to have OW cert. to get EAN. But you don't have to have AOW or Rescue, for example. So it authorizes you to get fills of Nitrox, and would convince anyone that you at least had an OW card, even if you'd lost it, but that would be as far as it goes.

If this isn't right or logical, I'm sure others will tell us.

THESKULL, I thought that was funny as all get out. You have a very valid point. Although, while it may suck for him, at least I came back alive! I will have to share your post with my dive buddy and ask him, because I say that to him every time. hahahah
But your point is well taken. I am just trying to be funny.

The card is your certification card. The paper that it was on is merely a validation card that you can use to obtain a replacement should you lose the actual card. It has your instructors signature and info on it. You should have received one with your ow card that says the same stuff only for open water as opposed to Enriched Air. It really is not confusing at all. Just don't try to read more into it than is there. Read only what is there. And congrats on the cert. Now you can do da voodoo gas, man.

Usually bolt on cards like that mean youre certified to use the gas/equipment within the limits specified by your main diving qualification (OW or whatever). In other words, the card says you can use nitrox, it doesnt specify to what depth you're qualified to dive to.

That said by TDI card bailed me out in florida when i got switched operators for my night dive and turned up without my qualification book as id already shown it at the start of the week (my agency do not issue cards). The woman looked at my TDI card, summised you had to be a qualified diver to get the card and as its a shallow reef night dive even basic level OW would meet that so i didnt have to drive back to the hotel and then back to the marina.

:) Of course. I was trying to be funny as well. Glad you took it that way.

JimLap is correct. The "other" card is something you keep in a safe spot so you can get your card replaced if you need.

All true, though it seems the practice may be a bit outdated. Now with PADI, I believe you as a certified diver can order replacement cards for just about any of your certs online, as long as you set up a profile on PADI's website. ;)
