Hi All,

I am contemplating enrolling in the e-learning DM program and was wondering what others think of its quality? I have not studied dive theory in a long time and I would like to review topics over a couple of times before I take the exam. Can you take the exam online as well? I would like to do my DM open water portion in a location with "warm water". Can I do the classroom work online and select a school later because I have not chosen a school/shop. How long do I have between the e-learn course and the open water course? I look forward to hearing your thoughts and guidance.

Regards,

Rick

It's good if you like learner on a screen. You're free do move at your own pace reviewing the knowledge reviews as frequently as you like.

Ideally it will be done with the instructor available to discuss questions with you and be more interactive that way. However, I do know people who pick a facility at random and later choosing where they'd actually wanted to train.

You have 6 months after completing the elearning.

Thank you for the information. I have a little time on my hands right now but since I only get 6 month to start a course I will have to wait for a little while.

I took eLearning and I have mixed feelings about it.

It is huge and takes a lot of motivation to sit in front of your computer hour after hour watching and listening to videos. I found it soul destroying and a drudge. However I took my DM locally, so there was no real alternative. If you are studying solo then eLearning is probably better than books.

If you are going away on an Intern course, then studying from the paper version alongside the other candidates, where you can discuss it all is probably better. Certainly it'll be more enjoyable.

The choice depends greatly on how you learn. While others may find e-learning a soul destroying drudge, that is how I feel about sitting in a classroom being forced to go at the pace of the instructor or class. Luckily I was given a choice. I did the e-learning and it was perfect for me. I did pop in on a class since I was free to do so and it made me feel that much better about my choice. It was a better match for my learning style.
A big advantage is the ability to go much faster than the class and then be able to go back and repeat a module multiple times if needed.
Since I did my IDC within 12 months of DM I was able to go back and redo a couple modules right before my IE and ended up with 100% on the written.
Only you can decide if e-learning is right for you. I know it is not the right choice for some people but it was perfect for me.

@MasterBlaster

Very valid points, and I have to agree. What I meant by book study (but didn't express very well) is that when I've seen DM's on overseas internships (while I've been on vacation) they all seem to be doing the theory study as a group in the evenings over food and a few drinks, which seems a whole lot move convivial than sitting in front of a computer home alone.

I'm currently studying for my IE at the end of Aug and using the workbooks which is just as tedious but at least I don't have to have someone drone on in my headphones.
