Hi All:

I'm into my third week of my PADI divemaster course. Yesterday was my first session in the pool practicing and demonstrating skills. While my skills demonstration was fairly good, my narrative around each skill was sorely lacking.

The PADI Divemaster video I received with my course materials (product #: 70844 rev 10/10 v3.0) lacks the narrative for each skill - as does all the other materials I received for the class. Our Instructor has not demonstrated each of the skills for the class. I was in the pool yesterday with other divemaster candidates - none of which were unable to deliver a narrative to the satisfaction of the Instructor.

My question is, does an "Official" PADI script exist for each of the 20 skills that I can learn from? Has anyone documented or recorded same that I can have access to?

Or, am I to be the subject of my Instructor's folly; and learn by their criticism of my skills voice overs in the pool ??

Let me know.

Thanks !

John

There is a method used to grade presentations for confined water training. You learn it in a IDC..Your instructor should not worry about how you describe/explain the skills at this point. Just do them in a controlled way and make it look "easy" ..Why the instructor has not done a "demonstration" quality skill for you I do not know.He /she should have to show you the steps and way to breakdown skills to make it look easy so that you know what to attain for.

No, there is no set "script". During an IDC, you learn the elements to talking through a skill - sort of the "why" and the "what" of the skill. At the DM level you should be able to clearly demo the skill as the Instructor as described it to the students. I am careful how I say that as there is no one way to do a skill. As a DM, you need to be aware of that and ensure that you are demonstrating the skill as to how an Instructor is describing it, versus how you are used to doing the skill.

I am surprised you are being asked for a "narrative" since that is not a "requirement" of a DM. As a DM, you will "demo" the skill for the Instructor who would brief the skill to the students. In an instructional situation that is the Instructors responsibility.

When you do your DSD Leadership, you will learn some of the "briefing" skills so that you can go through the skills with your students.

Right - the skills circuit is a demo - no talking required. Also - your instructor should demonstrate every skill for you first -

That was my thought as well - that my IDC Instructor would establish her expectations via a demonstration of skills & I would then hone my presentation of skills to her model.

I need to level set expectations with my Instructor at our next session.

Thanks for confirming my initial impression...

Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will send you a "critical attributes" sheet for the skills.

Official PADI script for the 20 DM Skills? It's existed for years!!

It's called: The PADI Open Water DVD for students.

At the end of every chapter, the confined water skills relevant to that training session are reviewed and demonstrated by senior PADI personnel; to score good points in your DM/IDC class, just do it a bit better.

Cheers,

C.

And to actually show how they are in the real world, do the UW skills neutral, horiztonal and in the water column!

When Im grading Divemasters the only skills i require talking for is Gear set up, Buddy Check and bouncey check. Then when they take there dsd leader I require talking/explaining for Reg recover, mask clear and alternate air source. I also know that as a store we're a bit harder on DM caditates that have expressed interest in moving to AI right after there done the DM as they will get less time for experence in between.
