Are there written tests for each of the 5 adventure dives, or do I just hand in copies of my knowledge review and do the dives and breifings?

Curious,
...steve...

There are no written tests for the PADI AOW cert. I did my first 3 dives a few weeks ago (UW Nav, Search & Recov, PPB) and will be finishing the AOW up this weekend (Deep, Wreck).

Prior to the dives we had to turn in the completed Knowledge Reviews for each related section in the Adventures In Diving book. The instructor went over each dive objective and what we were hoping to accomplish and what her signals would be for each task. Then we went and dove and performed the tasks she had lined up for us to demonstrate we had some basic proficiency. That was it.

For example, for my PPB dive, we had to do a weight check at the surface to adjust some trim, then at depth we had to demonstrate hovering and more fin pivots, then she had us swim through pvc hoops in various shapes using our breathing to rise/sink to make it through each shape (triangle was the hardest).

UW Nav required us to make a square pattern and a triangle pattern and measure how long it took us to swim 100ft (with time and with kick cycles) etc.

Search & Recovery we had to demonstrate attaching a liftbag to an object at depth, shooting it, and guiding it to the surface, then safely dumping the air out and bringing it back down. We also had fun trying to tie the 3 knots shown in the book at depth with 5mm gloves on. It wasn't too bad for me, but the other guy was having a hard time of it. Then she hid a weighted wiffle ball twice and we had to use 2 different search methods to find and recover it while she just observed.

All in the all, it was a lot of fun. Don't sweat it. Just have your knowledge reviews done and you'll be OK.

Mobster, Thanks for the reply. I've heard alot of good things about the PPB class. Alas, it is not one of the 5 we will do in my AOW (although they said it will be "touched on" and if I have time to read that chapter). I will be doing Deep, Wreck, Multi Level, Night, and Nav.

Dive Safe,
...steve...

No, there is not written test for PADI AOW.
Try to do the search & recovery, it's very fun!

Good luck!

I agree. search and recovery was alot of fun. It also helps you improve your use of a compass.

The one bad part about doing the night dive is that it will take some of the fun out of future day dives.

We worked on PPB on every dive of the AOW class which I really need help with. Talk to your instructor and mention that you would like to try PPB. He/she may let you spend more pool time with them during their regular classes.

I enjoyed, my night dive a lot... but was too freaked out at first so I sucked down my air in 32 minutes mostly at 40ft. We went down to 62ft my deepest dive so far.
Next Tuesday I'm doing the deep dive, Yay!

Wys.
