Does the AOW deep training include multi level dive planning/diving? Or does the NITROX class? Or is that additional training that could be one of my "adventure dives"?

Thanks, I'm totally new to this whole computer diving thing.

Nitrox is a separate course.

Multi-level can be part of the AOW course as one of the “elective” dives, or it can be taken separately as a specialty course.

The comments apply to PADI and NAUI.

Except that the PADI Multi-Level class has been discontinued by PADI, since it requires use of the discontinued eRDPML and does NOT train one in dive computer use on a multi-level dive. The class may still be taught if an instructor has the credential, but the content is not relevant to the OP's desire.
If a student came to me and wanted a class on multi-level computer diving as part of an AOW, I'd suggest doing the diving version of the EANx class, which has NO in-water skills, and use that Adventure dive as a multi-level dive and training session. If I did that before the Deep dive of the AOW, then we could apply the multi-level info to the Deep dive. I would not want to pile on the multi-level info to the Deep info, because there is plenty of angst and stuff to do on the Deep dive, but if the m-l stuff has already been gone over previously, it is probably OK to use that new info on the ascent part of the deep dive.
Or, just have the student do an extra dive that is specifically for multi-level training.

I think there are 2 ways to look at this.

1. If you are working on strictly getting PADI AOW certification, the deep dive (adventure dive) most likely is not going to cover multi level dive planning unless you have a great instructor willing to spend time with you. The deep dive is only 1 of 5 adventure dives you would complete for AOW. Will just say depending on where you take an AOW course, chances are it will work more like, read the section in the book on the adventure dive you're working on, complete some questions, get quizzed, discuss it with an instructor, and then complete the dive.

2. The Deep Diver specialty course in PADI has 4 required dives. Multi level dive planning is not specifically mentioned as one of the things you learn. Some other instructors may help you out here as to whether multi level planning may be included or give you some suggestions - like @tursiops has done. Just so you know as you decide what training you're actually looking for, the first of these 4 required deep dives can be applied to getting your AOW certification.

Hi @NCK

Deep Diver probably offers the best chance to learn multilevel diving. Of course, you can learn/practice this on your own with your computer. The one AOW deep dive will not help you. Nitrox requires no dives. For dive #4 of Deep Diver, my son and I planned and executed a deep wall dive in Grand Cayman at a max depth of over a 100 feet, with a run time of over 45 minutes. This was a dive we were already quite familiar with, swim down the wall to depth, come back up to the top of the wall, swim back to the boat over the top of the wall. The effects of a multilevel dive are quite apparent on a dive like this.

Thank you all, I didn't know there was a deep diver specialty course like this. I'm guna look into it.

When I did my AOW they offered either 5 dives where one was a night dive or six day dives.

I chose the 6 and each day we did one deep (29-32m) and one shallow. Is AOW usually different than what I did ?

Very.

One really has to clarify the organization - PADI, SSI/SDI, NAUI, etc... - that one took the AOW course from as there are some differences between what is required when comparing them. It seems pretty unique (at least to me) that "they" offered you a choice of 5 vs 6 dives, so I would say, at least for PADI, AOW is generally different than what you did, with possible exceptions.

You may have taken the AOW course with an outfit that has the ability to be flexible and offer different options - it may also be the way it is in Columbia vs other places around the world.

PADI requires 5 dives of which 2 are required (deep and navigation), so you can't just choose the 5 you want. For the other 3 dives you can choose what you want - but there is the possibility that not all that PADI offers (on their website) in the way of AOW adventure dives will be available depending on the dive op you take the course through. As an example, not every dive op will offer a night dive because their physical location doesn't allow for it. Some ops will tell you what they can and can't offer you up front. Also, if it is an AOW course, the instructors generally will not take you on a deep dive, unless that is the 1st dive completed of your five dives for AOW. Unless a person had been diving with the particular op/dive instructor and the instructor knew that person, I couldn't see most instructors taking a student on a deep dive as their very first dive. That's not to say that someone who is taking AOW hasn't already done several deep dives, just that an instructor during a course, probably wouldn't take someone down without observing prior diving ability of the student.

So, although there is a general structure for an AOW course, maybe you found the place that did it differently or maybe it was me who took it at a place that did it differently!!
