We had a very unsatisfying experience with pacific air.

I heard they had a baggage policy for the second bag weight so we were kind of expecting that. But it gets worse. Our flights to Nadi were all smooth and included an $84 bag fee for the “carry on” bags which we were told we would pay if they were carries or checked. The carry ons had our regs mask and my UW camera. The beef was the baggage nazi who checked us in hated everyone’s bag. Everything was too big too heavy too something wrong. As we enjoyed this person we watched the punk in the next line not weigh or check or fuss about any bags. So if you get the wrong line you pay and pay dearly. Even when we arrived for our Liveaboard, the group was 50/50 on whether or not they were charged.

Then the return flights and the wheels fell of the operation. We flew from Suva to Nadi no problem just $24 bag fee. At arrival in Nadi we are informed or departure is delayed from 10PM something to 0520. They will reschedule our missed connection in LAX. They did give us a voucher for a room, but we had to be at the airport at 0200 to check in so it was not much sleep. On arrival at 0200 about half to 400+ people were in line waiting to check in in front of us. At our turn we check our checked bag, the gal looks at our carryons and says we need to see the special handling desk. So we go there. They want to know why we are there – we tell them we were told to go there. They say no just go to security. Security looks at our carryons, picks them up and says these are too heavy you need to talk to the ticketing people get the “ok”. We tell we did this, but he doesn’t believe us or something so we go back to special handling only to be turned away again, but this time they want to know who gave us our boarding passes and escort us down the row of check in people so we can finger the one. We do this. She seemed about as confused as us, we pay another $54 check one of the carryons and head to security to be grilled again by the same guy. We finally convince him we have “got the ok” and paid our fine and we get through. At the gate we are informed it’s another hour late. We finally take off, no apologies, no waived fees, no nothing. We get breakfast, then no services for hours. You had to get up and go get your drink from the crew – even just water!!! This is a 10 hour flight! The plane is old and dated. Many remotes didn’t work, it was rather ghetto.

Once in LAX and inline to get new flights and another hotel, we get both, but no boarding pass for our flight leaving in 6 hours. They tell us to use the same conf code to check in. We get to he hotel and try this = errors can’t be processed. I call American – no ticket has been issued, call Pacific air, they say call American, then tell us to go to the airport – it’s not 0130 – but we go – why get up in a couple hours for a flight we are not on. No one is there. I call them back, they say they will have staff there after 0300, so we sleep a couple hours and return at 0400, no one there. We go to American they somehow figure it out and we leave.

The delays happen, but the airline handled it poorly at best. The bag fee – while this is their policy it is CRAP! $160 in bag fees??? Who does this for a carry on? Nearly no services, even after all the hassles – unacceptable. Everyone on that plane said they will never fly them again – even the Fijians! Outright everyone we talked to said same as us NEVER AGAIN. I would recommend Air New Zealand or Qantas, but be warned, there were tickets sold by 4 airlines on the pacific air flight.

I will NEVER give Pacific air my dollars.

I was on this flight as well and have to say the service was lacking. Although it wasn't much worse than most US carriers. On all my flights to and around Fiji (LAX->Nadi, Nadi->Taveuni, Taveuni->Nadi, Nadi->Suva, Suva->Nadi, Nadi-LAX), with a very heavy carry-on, I never had to pay any baggage fees. I was worried I would have to since I had my regulator, underwater housing and lens, top-sided lenses, etc, but when anyone questioned me I just said it was camera and scuba gear to enjoy their beautiful country, and they always let me pass. But it was definitely 3-4 kilos over their 7kg limit.

Even though we missed our connection in LAX because of the late flight they rebooked us on a red eye to NYC that night with no issues. The plane is very old and dated and the service lacking, but I was aware of that before booking the flights so it met my expectations. The only thing I think they were completely unprepared for was rebooking an entire 747 worth of people in LAX. They had 3 people to handle the entire plane. Thankfully we were towards the front of the line so it wasn't bad, but I can see why frustration and anger would quickly build.

I would never go out of my way to fly Air Pacific again, but coming from the US I don't really see a better option. Flying to Australia/New Zealand then connecting seems like a waste of time for an already very long flight.

I am disputing my bag fees now. if they don't refund them I will have the visa reverse the charge. What a joke. I told them the same thing you did and they made us pay. The others on our boat didn't pay fees either. Not only that but we were charged different amounts coming and going. Who's foot was on the scale??? Found some other reviews to day and they don't get good marks very often

We flew in and out of Nadi in April on Air Pacific. Our experience was very different. Yes, older plane but staff at both airports, and the flight crew were very friendly and accommodating. Our group (there were 14 of us) were aware of the carry on issues and were all very close to the 7kg limit if not over- no one was charged.

Flew Air Pacific in their "first class" cabin last year. It's a very old plane, for sure. The food is adequate, but most importantly - they're cheap. You simply cannot expect first world carrier service (a la Thai Air or Qantas) on such an inexpensive long haul.

If you need the bells and whistles, fly Qantas. If you can stomach 3X the price, you'll be pleased. Otherwise, realize that you flew the international equivalent of Southwest Airlines and deal with it.

If you mentioned it I must have missed it but were your bags over the weight limits? Wy do you think you were singled out for the harsh treatment?

I flew Air Pacific and overall had a pleasant experience. I knew the weight limits would be strictly enforced (we flew on a very small plane) and prepared for it. At one point they even weighed the people as well as the baggage!

I hope the diving was enjoyable at least:)

Firstly, sorry to hear about your experience. I'm a regular flyer, and even the best airlines have their off days.

I've flown Air Pacific dozens of times, and my experiences reflect the other posters - older planes, a little disorganised, they often work on island time, but nothing horrible like your story. How many bags were you carrying on?

We flew Air Pacific last fall. Baggage charges were a little inconsistent for my carry on, even though it was packed the same coming and going. However, we found everyone to be friendly and very accommodating. I had no problem at all with the plane or the food or the service. Wouldn't hesitate to fly Air Pacific again at all.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what is going on here...they are charging you for a single carry-on bag????? I am looking at their website on bag allowances and it clearly states that the limits for bags for economy class is one carry-on and once checked bag with weight limits of 15 and 50 pounds respectively.

Are they really charging you for a single carry on?????

My overall beef is we were charged while many others were not. I have left out the ridiculous runaround we got and all the BS, not friendly, not accommodating, endless runaround. and yes, this was a standard carry-on by every measure. flown everywhere else with it no problems.
