Hello,

My father's birthday is in a few weeks and I was thinking about getting him a few hours of a pool refresher. He used to dive about 25 years ago and was really into, then kids came and it took a back seat. My husband and I dive and I think he would be interested in coming with us a few times a year. My question is, do I get this for him, knowing that he will have to spend a lot of money on getting new equiptment (or at least on rental) or is it rude to get a gift that involves that much work, or do I just break down and ask him? Thanks.

If he seems interested sure. Sounds like a great gift to me. Very thoughtful.

I agree but if money is a real issue it may be good to ask him if his really that interested. Wouldn't want him to feel obligated to join you just because of the refresher. Also if he is already certified and is comfortable you guys could get him wet again without the big expense just to see if he is still interested and then go from there. Take him to the pool with your gear and check him out. No harm no foul.

I would certainly approach him about it before you go buy the refresher course. wvdiver is right that you wouldn't want to put him in the bad position of having to commit to something he is not in a position to do. But, sounds like a great gift though, if he would be interested! Keep us posted!

Personally, If it's something that he used to do, liked doing, and has showed interest in doing again I would go for it. Doing a refresher doesn't automatically mean that he has to take up the sport again or put in any costs that he doesn't want to. It just means that he gets to get into the water for an hour or two and remember why he liked the sport to begin with.

What a very nice idea!!

Even if it just results in a couple of hours in a pool, my bet is that he'll enjoy it. Include a little gear rental for the refresher. If he decides that its enough, so be it. If it re-kindles an old flame of an activity, so much the better!

Even though I am all for surprises, I hate a gift that you have to PRETEND to like. Although he's sure to love the gift, you're right about the additional $$ issue.

I vote for ASKING HIM first. Hopefully everyone wins!
